How to Use Your GPA for Scholarship Applications

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a summary of your academic performance. Schools usually calculate it by giving each course grade a numerical value, multiplying that value by the course credit, adding the results, and dividing by your total course credits.

Use the calculator above to enter your completed courses, credits and grade points. Your result is a useful planning figure, but always use the GPA shown on your official academic record when a scholarship or university asks for it.

GPA scales are not all the same

A GPA can be reported on different scales, including 4.0, 4.3, 5.0, 10.0 or a percentage system. A 3.5 on a 4.0 scale is not automatically equivalent to a 3.5 on a 5.0 scale. Universities and scholarship providers may publish their own conversion method or ask applicants to submit transcripts rather than convert the result themselves.

When reviewing an opportunity, check whether the stated minimum GPA uses your institution's scale, a specific conversion method, a class ranking or another academic requirement. Do not assume that a calculator result guarantees that you meet the requirement.

Using GPA when comparing scholarships

GPA is only one part of many scholarship decisions. Depending on the opportunity, reviewers may also consider your programme, nationality, financial need, leadership, work or volunteer experience, research experience, language requirements, recommendation letters and application documents.

Use your GPA to narrow your research, then read each scholarship's full eligibility requirements and confirm them with the official provider. Some opportunities state a minimum GPA, while others assess applicants competitively without publishing a fixed cutoff.

Plan your next step

  • Browse scholarships by country, funding type, study level and deadline.
  • Use the Scholarship Matcher to explore opportunities based on your study plans and preferences.
  • If your institution uses cumulative grades, try the CGPA Calculator for a broader academic-performance estimate.
